Mazda began its life in 1920-1931 as a cork manufacturer.
Toyo Cork Kogyo Company
In 1920, the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd., was founded in Hiroshima, Japan by Jujiro Matsuda. As the name suggests, the company initially manufactured cork, and so set in motion the Mazda beginnings.
Mr. Jujiro Matsuda
In 1931, the name "Mazda" was born. The word Mazda refers to the family surname "Matsuda" as well as Ahura Mazda, the West Asian God of wisdom, intelligence and harmony. This is the Mazda beginnings.
MAZDA THE EARLY YEARS,
THREE WHEELS AND THE REBUILDING OF A CITY 1931-1945
Mazda's first car was the three-wheeled "GREEN PANEL" and was exported to India and China where it was proved very popular thanks to its excellent maneuverability. From the entrepreneurial spirit of the company's founder, this was but one example of Mazda's unconventional thinking and 'can-do' attitude, that comes as a result of the 'Hiroshima Spirit' of overcoming challenges.
The most dramatic demonstration of Mazda's unique spirit came in 1945, directly after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Mazda played an integral part in the reconstruction of Hiroshima - the Mazda plant itself was relatively undamaged in the blast - and was used as a place from which to organize the reconstruction and relief aid effort in and around Hiroshima.
From "Mazda Cosmo" sports to "Mazda RX-8" sports
The Wankel engine, which is also known as a rotary engine, was developed by Felix Wankel in the 1950. The Wankel engine is radically different in structure from conventional reciprocating piston engines. Instead of having pistons that move up and down in cylinders, the Wankel engine has a triangular orbiting rotor that turns in a closed chamber. This Mazda rotary engine was patented in the late 1950's.
We, Mazda, make history as the only
car manufacturer in the world that produces
cars with rotary engines until now
As the ideal engine for sport cars that provides high RPM and comes with compact size, the rotary engine is incorporated into different models of Mazda cars, including Cosmo 1105, legendary RX-7 and RX-8.
The Mazda 787, powered by a rotary engine, became the first Japanese car to win the 24 Hours of Le Mansin 1991.
Legendary roadster has returned.
The 50's and 60's is the golden age of roasters in England. But, from 1980 onwards, prosperity faded away and no manufacturer produced roasters any longer.
Until Mazda initiated to develop and brought the roasters again to life with a goal and commitment to produce the cutting-edge, safe and fun-to-drive roaster with original sport roadster concept.
The first model Mazda MX-5 weighed only 955 kg, making it an extremely lightweight sports car with a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout that gave excellent driving performance.
It was a rebirth of the Mazda MX-5 sport roadster that offers joy of driving and pride of ownership, which becoming an unquestionably the best-selling roadster in history.
Historic Victory at Le Mans
The Mazda 787, powered by a rotary engine, became the first Japanese car to win the most ancient and extremely tough race, 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991. Although Mazda 787 had an disadvange regarding performance, the reliability and durability was what powered it to victory.Until present, this remains the only victory of a car that is not using a reciprocating engine. It was the first victory by a Japanese manufacturer derived from thinking outside the box and commitment to win and create a new chapter in history.
From MAZDA6 to MAZDA RX-8
