When you follow your imagination, you create your own rules. You’re free to nurture a strong focus on human-centric design. To develop a firm grounding in the handcrafted forms of Mazda’s Kodo-Soul of Motion design language. To make a commitment to a future of cleaner more sustainable earth for future generations. To create without boundaries, that’s how imagination drives us.
Design
Japanese design philosophy does not separate form and function – beauty and purpose go hand in hand. For this reason, Japanese craftsmen strive to master both aspects equally. This reflects in the way we design cars as well: Through decades of learning, refining, and perfecting their traditional craftmanship, our designers create cars that are more than just a mere mode of transport – they are an object of fascination and a celebration of design philosophy that, like Japanese culture, strives for premium quality with a handcrafted touch.
Our Kodo Design philosophy compels us to create cars that embody the dynamic beauty of life. Cars that transcend the limitations of a simple A to B vehicle and become a partner you can rely on, that inspires you. The design of every Mazda expresses the beauty of motion seen in all living creatures, giving each vehicle a soul of its own.
We’re in the golden age of computer-aided design. It allows us to render 3D models with a level of accuracy that was out of reach just a few short years ago. But at Mazda, design starts with a block of clay. And for that, there is simply no substitute. Artisans shape the clay until the ideal lines reveal themselves and only then do they collaborate with digital modelers. This traditional/digital partnership takes the best of both worlds to create uniquely appealing designs.
Master painters use the spray gun and meticulous hand movements to add layer by layer, like an artist, and work with colour designers to pursue the ideal colour, creating beauty that captures people’s hearts. Only after you see the colour do form, design, and details follow. Colour can give a car character, make it stand out and bring the beauty of our Kodo Design to life.
Once the initial design is finalized, it goes to an expert fabricator like Koji Fujii who crafts it into a scale model. His goal is to create a model even “more perfect than the real car.” Every part of the car that will be visible to its occupants must be reproduced precisely. Revisions can also be made at this point, which is another example of Mazda’s collaborative design process. Quality is never compromised.
At Mazda, we are all about the drive – and how it makes you feel. Because we know that driving is so much more than the simple act of operating an automobile. It’s about touch, feel. Not only should your car respond perfectly to driving input, but every system should be intuitive, instilling a sense of harmony and confidence, heightening your state of being through an elevated driving experience. That’s what Mazda is all about.
The unity between man and car, or Jinba Ittai, is Mazda’s philosophy of sports car development that integrates the driver and the car into one. This allows for a focus on superior driving, inspiring and making driving more enjoyable regardless of the destination.
Crafting cars for extraordinary experiences necessitates construction of extraordinary engines – engines with just as much soul as the car as a whole. Our guiding theme with our Skyactiv technology is therefore: No bits and pieces. Just focus on the perfect symbiosis between driving pleasure, peak performance, and efficiency. Challenge and redefine even the smallest component for the overarching goal when necessary. We call this Skyactiv technology.
